Operation Backpack 2017

Do you remember your first day at school each year? Do you remember the excitement you felt having that new backpack slung over your shoulder with the latest character plastered all over it, all those new school supplies stuffed in there ready to show off? Can you visualize the cool new folders that have your name neatly printed on them, the pencil box that matches your backpack, and the new markers and crayons? Most of you have a smile from ear to ear right now, I know I did. That was an amazing time for most of us. Unfortunately, this is not the reality for many children. The first day of school for children who are homeless and living at a shelter or children who live in foster homes can be filled with anxiety and fear because they will have few if any new school supplies let alone a new backpack. Because of this on the first day of school, these children are labeled and it sets the tone for the rest of the school year. One of the greatest impacts homelessness has is on a child’s education and the stigma that comes along with it can also affect a child’s self-worth. I believe that the most precious gifts we are given in life are children and they are our future. Too many school-age children are going without the basic supplies they need to be productive at school. This is where Operation Backpack comes in and you have the chance to make a difference.

Public schools are intended to be the great equalizer: everyone, no matter their demographics or class, is supposed to get a good education at no cost. But even public schools are not entirely free, and the costs of education can be a strain on a low-income family.

Operation Backpack was formed to help those children who at no fault of their own are not able to start school with the basic supplies that they need. Operation Backpack relies 100% on support from the community. Not only are they helping to ready children in need of learning, but they are also helping to remove the stigma that can follow children that are homeless or live in foster care. This year DejaVu Estate Liquidators is teaming up with “It Only Takes One”, a Grass Roots 501(c) organization, to help fill 1,000 backpacks with the basic school supplies for homeless, at-risk, and foster children in Palm Beach County. Help us to give these children the happy memories they deserve.  DejaVu will be hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, July 8th at 4086 PGA Blvd. in Palm Beach Gardens, FL from 2 pm-6 pm. We will be holding a silent auction with door prizes, live entertainment, and refreshments. This event is absolutely free but we are encouraging you to donate school supplies for Operation Backpack. For those that are unable to attend you can still donate at the store through August 1st. Below is a list of some of the supplies suggested.
